Truancy and chronic absenteeism are complex issues that have a wide-reaching impact on students, their families, school districts and communities as a whole. In order to successfully tackle these issues, school districts must commit to building a culture of attendance that focuses on prevention, early identification, and intervention. Covina-Valley Unified School District in Los Angeles County has launched a successful comprehensive attendance campaign that combines data analysis, partnerships with government and community agencies, and an effective School Attendance Review Board (SARB) to improve attendance and school culture. Dr. Jessica Houpt and Dr. Erin Simon, will share easily replicable ideas and strategies for implementation of an effective school attendance plan.
